Monrovia-The Liberian Senate Thursday began its initial debate on the alien and nationality bill introduced by Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney Sherman.

The alien and nationality bill introduced by the Grand Cape Mount Senator is calling for several amendments to be made on key provisions that point to dual nationality in the Liberian Constitution.

After listening to the presentation by Senator Varney Sherman, Senators were seen bickering on whether or not to join the campaign for an amendment to the alien and nationality law of Liberia.

In a heated session, Senator Daniel Naatehn expressed that the amendment in the law is necessary something that should be encouraged by well-meaning Liberians

Senators Oscar Cooper of Margibi County, Senator Morris Saytumah of Bomi and Senator Joseph Nagbe of Sinoe emphasized the need for ample research to be made by senators regarding whether or not an amendment should be made in the alien and nationality law of Liberia.

After the heated debate, Senator Varney Sherman who is calling for amendment to the alien and nationality law said he will rally support with his colleagues on the need to amend the nationality law that encourages dual citizenship to Liberia.

At same time, Nimba County Senator Prince Johnson was taken aback regarding amendments to the alien and nationality law of Liberia.

Speaking during the initial debate on the alien and nationality law Thursday, Senator Johnson said amendments on dual nationality is not necessary to the country in this current time.

According to the Nimba Senator, there are more pressing concerns that should be discussed other than the amendment to the alien and nationality law of Liberia.

The action by Senator Prince Johnson is a slap in the face of those calling for dual nationality including his ally President George Manneh Weah.

Senator Sherman said certain amenities and privileges will not be given to those seeking for dual nationality if such amendment is made to the alien and nationality law.

Meanwhile the presiding officer of the Liberian Senate took seize of the debate to resume Thursday of next week as a result of power failure during the heat of the debate.
