Senate begins discussions into the passage of Land Rights Acts

Monrovia-The Liberian Senate has begun initial discussion leading to the passage of the Land Rights Bill.

The bill has suffered several setbacks since its submission by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf back in 2014,

In 2015, the Senate plenary mandated a committee to evaluate the proposed Act and advice plenary.

The Act takes into consideration four issues which including; Private Land rights, Customary Land and Public and Protected Areas.

Making a power point presentation at the Liberian Senate, the head of the committee on Lands, Mines and Energy Senator George Tengbeh said the committee has made relevant corrections to the bill and intends to hold more consultation with civil society organizations.

Senator Tengbeh indicated that views collected from the consultation nationwide will be brought to the Liberian senate for debate before passage.

Well reacting to the presentations, several senators expressed the need for several provisions focusing on customary land right to be revisited.

The senators also called for nationwide consultation highlighting the views of those in the rural parts of the country.
