National Legislature begins hearing into 2018-2019 draft budget

Monrovia-The National Legislature has begun hearing into the 2018-2019 draft budget with all revenue generating entities cited under its first component.

At the official opening Tuesday in the joint chambers of the legislature, the Presiding and Chair of the House’s Ways, Means and Finance committee Representative Thomas Fallah said the hearings will be conducted in closed door.

Representative Fallah termed as a constitutional fulfillment the scrutiny of the budget following a peaceful transition from one democratically elected government to another.

He promised the Legislature compliance in hearing from government line ministries and agencies on both the revenue and expenditure of the Country.

The House’s Chair then lauded the government through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning for the timely submission of this year’s budget.

In brief remarks, Finance Minister Samuel Tweh revealed that the budget was submitted to the legislature in a challenging time.

Minister Tweh recounted the economic challenges facing the country including commodities shock.

According to him, the legislature will need to strategize measures aimed at addressing the revenue challenges among others.

Meanwhile the Liberia Revenue Authority Acting Commissioner General Decontee King Sackie called for a review that will enable the entity meet the target for the support of government developmental agenda.

Madam Sackie who vowed to cooperate with the hearings challenged other revenue generating arms of government to set standards for fruitful outcomes.
