Monrovia-Several committees of the Liberian House of Representatives have been mandated to probe a petition by Liberians for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court in the country.
The committees which include Security, Ways, Means and Finance, Claims and Petition, Judiciary and Good Governance are expected to report to plenary in the next one month.
Recently, some Liberians petitioned the House of Representatives to act on the establishment of a war and economic crimes court to prosecute those who committed atrocities in Liberia.
The petitioners maintained that the establishment of the court will foster genuine peace and reconciliation in the country.
It can be recalled a previous petition by the group was thrashed when some members of the House of Representatives requested them to redo their petition on grounds that it was general and not specific.
During Thursday’s sitting, the House of Representatives also instructed its leadership committee to handle a petition from the Liberia Children’s Representative Forum.
The Children’s Representative Forum of late called on the House to amend the Senate’s version of the Rape Law of Liberia which makes it a non-billable offense.
They argued in their petition, that the Senate’s version is not only a recipe to encourage the act but counterproductive to human rights.
A motion by Representative Rustonlyn Dennis to have the committees on Gender, Judiciary, and Claims and Petition looked into the matter was later amended by Representative Larry Younquoi for leadership to handle it.
