CENTAL releases Third State of Corruption Report

HIGHLIGHTS LACK OF PROSECUTION OF CORRUPT OFFICIALS AS REASONS FOR PUBLIC SECTOR CORRUPTION.

Monrovia, Liberia – The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia has released its third State of Corruption Report, highlighting the lack of prosecution of corrupt officials as a major reason for public sector corruption.

The CENTAL report reveals that bribery and a lack of political will from the government in the fight against corruption are factors responsible for the spread of corruption in the country.

According to the report, out of 728 respondents interviewed in nine counties, 90 percent attributed Liberia’s underdevelopment to the growing wave of rampant corruption.

Presenting the report Wednesday in Monrovia, CENTAL program manager Gerald Yeakula said the report places more responsibility on the Liberian government to adequately fund anti-graft institutions in the country.

The U.S. Treasury’s recent report on dishonest public personnel sanctioned for misappropriating public monies and engaging in corruption is consistent with the findings of the CENTAL investigation.
