President-elect Boakai visits scene of tragic tanker explosion

Bong County – The President-elect of Liberia, Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has presented two hundred bags (25 kg) of rice and ten million Liberian dollars (10,000,000) to the families of the victims of the sad petroleum tanker explosion in Bong County as a gesture of support.

The catastrophic petroleum tanker explosion in Totota Lower Bong county, which resulted in the deaths of over sixty Liberians, was the scene of a visit by the President-elect on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

Tuesday, December 26, 2023, saw a sad occurrence involving a tanker that was en route to Nimba County with over 9,000 gallons of gasoline.

President-elect Boakai acknowledged the unfortunate situation and is aware of the serious effects it has on the impacted families and the nation as a whole. During his visit, he sent his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and offered prayers and support for the healing of other victims receiving care at various hospitals around the nation.

President-elect Boakai attended a church service near the tragic location during his visit. Amb. Boakai also paid a visit to the location of the mass burial, spoke with local officials, first responders, and civic leaders, and offered condolences to the families who had lost a loved one.

“We are here today to console you; we are here today to tell you that we feel just as hurt as you are, We will stand with you because this is a family affair.”

He stressed the value of a citizen’s fundamental education in terms of safety, self-awareness, and emergency preparedness.

Simultaneously, he called on state security to carry out an exhaustive inquiry into the reason behind this tragedy and provide pertinent suggestions for preventive actions.

The visit is more evidence of President-elect Boakai’s commitment to promoting national reconciliation and healing in trying times.
