NEC Announces Maryland County Rerun in Chambers and Williams Case

Monrovia, Liberia – The two competing candidates from the 2023 legislative general elections will re-run on January 25, 2024, in Electoral District # 2 of Maryland County at Precinct Code 27020, Old Sodaken Town Hall, according to an announcement made by the National Elections Commission.

The Maryland County rerun, according to NEC, is based on a ruling by the Supreme Court of Liberia stating that a recount or rerun is necessary.

It is known that the NEC Board of Commissioners’ ruling in the Maryland County case involving Bhofal Chambers and Anthony Williams was reversed by the Supreme Court.

As a result the High Court ordered that the votes be recast in two voting locations in District Number #2, Pleebo Sodoken, under severe security.

The court ordered a rerun of two polling places in Maryland County’s District #2 with armed security officers present, upholding the ruling of its hearing officer to deny House Speaker Bhofal Chambers’ appeal.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court held that in cases where electoral violence is evident, as it was in District Number 2 of Maryland County, a rerun or recount is necessary.

According to the NEC, the campaign for the rerun in Maryland County’s Old Sodaken Town Hall precinct will start on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, and run through Wednesday, January 23, 2024.

The Commission invites all parties involved, as well as domestic and international observers and the media, to attend the recount in Nimba and the rerun in Maryland County.
