Monrovia, Liberia – Senator Nathaniel Farlo McGill of Margibi County has urged President Joseph Boakai, should he choose not to engage in personal witch hunts, to factor in the previous 12 years of Unity Party leadership when reclaiming assets.
Senator McGill announced his strong support for the creation of the Office of Assets Recovery Process in a statement that was shared over the weekend on his official Facebook page. He also acknowledged his previous position as an Executive official.
He stated that it is imperative that both current and former government officials be held responsible for their stewardship and any possible misappropriation of public funds, but stressed that this process shouldn’t be restricted to the last six years, which corresponded with the Coalition for Democratic Change administration.
The senator from Margibi County stated that obtaining assets that may have been misappropriated and conducting an investigation with fairness and impartiality depend on a transparent process.
In his opinion, leaders can show that they are dedicated to maintaining the rule of law and integrity in public service by working with the Office of Assets Recovery and any other investigating agencies.
All officials, past and present, are being urged by the senator to accept the accountability process and aid the Office of Asset Recovery in their vital tasks.
Senator McGill once served in the Weah administration, and played a key role in the governing process. The Margibi senator served as minister of state for presidential affairs before his sencion by the U.S. government in 2022. The senator’s closeness to the then president made him more powerful, almost running all affairs of the country internally while, the former president allegedly focused on international engagements.
Many Liberians also accuse the Margibi Senator of embezzling money and resources from the people and of participating in other sorts of corruption. The senator was also charged with interacting with ex-warlords and providing them with positions of security in various organizations.
