Monrovia, Liberia – Former government officials, staff members, and private individuals who are still in possession of government properties have been given a 10-day ultimatum by the recently established Liberia’s Assets Recovery Property Retrieval Taskforce to voluntarily surrender them between Friday, March 22 and March 31, 2024, in order to avoid unspecified legal actions.

The taskforce’s chair, council member Edwin Kla Martin, stated that the procedure is not intended to persecute a certain group during his remarks on Thursday at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) Regular Press Briefing in Monrovia.

The recovery and retrieval procedures, he continued, would be based on solid evidence, and nobody would be wrongfully accused due to their political membership.

The taskforce also promises to respect and maintain the confidentiality of any information provided by anyone who may have information about any hidden or stolen governmental assets.

As per Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin, the objective of the President Boakai Executive Order is to initiate a fresh phase of responsible governance and accountability.

stating that the foundation for all civilized countries in the world is excellent governance and accountability. He pointed out that democracies, responsible government, the rule of law, and accountability are the cornerstones of civilized nations.

According to the Assets Recovery Chair, the state and its citizens are destroyed by corrupt nations, which are considered to be vouchers.

He claimed that extreme poverty, inadequate health care delivery systems, underdevelopment, shoddy roads, subpar educational initiatives, and low pay for system workers are the consequences of corrupt countries.

Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s peace and prosperity are in grave danger due to climate change. Liberia, the oldest nation in Africa, has experienced economic instability, health crises, and civil conflict while navigating a difficult road to stability. However, in contrast to previous struggles, the climatic problem is not limited to a single chapter in Liberia’s history of progress. The consequences of global warming are long-lasting and gradually intensify. Warmer days will eventually lead to more intense months and years. Unpredictable patterns of rainfall will worsen into increasingly regular and devastating floods. The effects will extend beyond environmental deterioration and affect Liberia’s population’s well-being as well as the country’s economy.

The World Bank Group has released a national assessment on development and climate in Monrovia in light of this. The study seemed to look at how climate change is affecting Liberia, deal with these problems with development partners’ help, and advance the field for the good of the country and its people.

In remarks during the launch, the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone stated that the study is crucial for the Liberian government to work on in order to support the national development plan of the nation.

In his view, decreasing poverty is the goal of the World Bank’s 21st-century core principles, which includes combating climate change. The greater growth rate since 2013 is examined in the report, he said, adding that the World Bank finds this to be highly significant.

Mr. Taliercio mentioned that the private sector, including development partners, should work with the government to combat climate change in Liberia because of the report’s thorough examination of the country’s climate, water, health, food, environment, forestry, energy, and climate finance.

The World Bank Director informed his audience that the report highlights noted that if Liberia does not face climate change sooner, the country’s poverty rate may increase, severely affecting the country’s economy, agriculture, and other important sectors, including the risk of national disaster.

He expressed the World Bank’s full readiness to work with the Liberian government. According to the World Bank Country Director, the areas of infrastructure development, electricity, land, forestry, carbon capture, and other important areas are key to the report for the protection and development of Liberia in the space of climate change.

Mr. Taliercio pleaded with the Liberian government to pay key attention to the report and add the climate change issue to the country’s budget.

Speaking as well, IFC Senior Country Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Kyle Kelhofer, notes that the research comes at a critical moment and urges action to address climate change together with the business sector.

He noted that the corporate sector and civil society are crucial to the process and promised the full assistance of his organization to address climate change. According to Mr. Kelhofer, initiatives aimed at increasing capacity, including those related to agriculture, are crucial in the fight against climate change.

He went on to say that the banking industry is crucial to the effort to combat climate change. The country director stated that the report’s introduction today marks the beginning of the fight against climate change in Liberia.

Representing the government of Liberia, Deputy Minister for Budgeting at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Minister Tanneh G. Brunson, said, Climate change has become a reality for Liberia and, in fact, much faster than all scenarios could have predicted.

According to her, climate change is not just an environmental issue, and too many people still believe this. She noted that the threat from climate change is serious and impacts both the public and private sectors. Madam Brunson added that it is an all-encompassing threat to health, agriculture, peace, and security, to the very ground millions of people live on, and to the global economy.

Climate change is a development concern that everyone should strive to address, according to the MFDP deputy minister. At the World Bank’s Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) launch for Liberia, she expressed her pleasure about being there.

According to the report, despite being one of the countries that emits the fewest greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, Liberia is not well-prepared to deal with the consequences of the phenomenon. Therefore, rather than focusing on mitigation, many of the climate measures that the study recommends are in response to the needs for climate adaptation.

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, takes seriously the report’s conclusions, according to Deputy Minister Tanneh Brunson. The government assures partners that it will continue to fund initiatives like these for the benefit of Liberia, its citizens, and all other citizens.

Monrovia, Liberia – At the only state-run medical school, AM Dogliotti College of Medicine and Health Sciences, final-year female students have expressed their displeasure with the terrible atmosphere in which they are forced to learn.

The female medical students listed a number of significant obstacles to their education at the state-run medical school, including inadequate dormitory facilities, limited professors, a lack of study materials, transportation, food, and internet connectivity.

Victoria Nimely is a final-year AM medical student. One of the main issues facing the medical school, according to Dogliotti, is that it has very few resources and a small number of instructors who work part-time because they have to teach students at the hospital as well. She pointed out that this means that students cannot benefit from full-time instruction like they can in other nations.

She revealed that there is no library or reading material available to medical students to supplement their education, which she claimed is hindering their ability to learn.

Emma Johnson is another final year student at the state-run medical school. She asserted that one of her major challenges in medical school is having a child and the lack of medical resources to facilitate their studies.

She noted: “For me, one of the challenges I face while being in a medical school is having a child. Having a child and attending a medical school of study is a huge challenge. We don’t have books. If we want books, sometimes we have to find a way to download the soft copies to be able to read because we don’t hard copy books,” she asserted.

The female medical students were explaining their challenges over the weekend when they received a donation of some spetical, from the Finance Officer at the European Union Delegation to Sierra Leon, who formerly worked in Liberia for four years and five months, as his way of giving back to female medical students in Liberia to enhance their work.

In responding to the numerous challenges outlined by the female medical students, AM Doglitti Clinical Coordinator Madam Gbanblon acknowledged the multiple challenges faced by the medical school.

She, however, sent a passionate plea to the EU Ambassador to look in the direction of the medical school with whatever support they can provide to the medical school.

She disclosed that there are lots of challenges that the medical students go through ranging from inadequate medical instructors, lack of specialists or consultants in the country to train the young generation of medical students.

She continued: “As a faculty member of the medical school, I’ll say there are lots of challenges that our students go through, ranging from us not having enough faculty members to the fact that we don’t have many specialists or consultants in the country to train the young generation, looking outside the fact that we don’t have what it takes to accommodate our students, talking about bus transportation, talking about dormitories, talking about hospitals that will accommodate most of the students,” she noted.

The lack of seating capacity to accommodate many students in the medical school based on the increased number of medical students is a serious challenge, said AM Dogliotti, Clinical Coordinator.

In brief remarks, the Finance Officer at the EU Delegation to Sierra Leon, Kiril Nikolov said his family was moved to donate spherical to final year female medical students based on their motivation and sacrifices they make to safe human lives.

The EU Delegate said these female medical students are the new hopes of Liberia because they are different, smart, and devoted to their professions of saving lives, noting stressing that he drove almost 600km from Sierra Leon to be in Liberia with a new hope of Liberia.

Nikolov emphasized that it is a great honor for him and his family to donate to female medical students of Liberia because majority of his family members are medical practitioners who spent their entire lives saving human lives.

The donation is in honor of his 93-year-old aunt, who spent half of his life as a medical doctor saving human lives, noting that his first profession was as a lifeguard assigned to the sea to save lives.

The EU diplomat said that his contribution is intended to save millions of lives especially the lives of children who are vulnerable to many diseases in Africa.

The Achille Mario Dogliotti College of Medicine and Health Sciences which is known as AM Dogliotti was established in the early and mid-60s as a concept for Liberia to train its own medical doctors by President William V. S. Tubman.

The AM Dogliotti College of Medicine and Health Sciences was formerly called the Monrovia-Torino College of Medicine was merged with the University of Liberia as the seventh academic program, and the second professional school (the Law School being the first professional school).

The country’s oldest and only medical school is still faced with challenges, as outlined by some female final year medical students and faculty members.

During the 54th Legislature, on August 25, 2023, members of LEGISPOOL, an association representing professional journalists covering the legislature in Liberia, had its elective congress and unanimously elected a new corps of executives to serve as the group’s leaders for the following two years.

In an effort to address the long-standing leadership issue within the Press Union of Liberia, the umbrella group for all media outlets in the country, Koinyeneh of LEGISPOOL encouraged the heads of auxiliaries to begin discussions. He invited the Executive Mansion Press Corps., the Judiciary Reporters Association, the Sports Writers Association of Liberia, and the Reporters Association of Liberia to join the battle to preserve the union.

The newly elected president expressed disapproval towards legislators who failed to show up for the program. In his words, their nonattendance sends a message to journalists that they should back their own candidates rather than push them.

Monrovia, Liberia – Senator Nathaniel Farlo McGill of Margibi County has urged President Joseph Boakai, should he choose not to engage in personal witch hunts, to factor in the previous 12 years of Unity Party leadership when reclaiming assets.

Senator McGill announced his strong support for the creation of the Office of Assets Recovery Process in a statement that was shared over the weekend on his official Facebook page. He also acknowledged his previous position as an Executive official.

He stated that it is imperative that both current and former government officials be held responsible for their stewardship and any possible misappropriation of public funds, but stressed that this process shouldn’t be restricted to the last six years, which corresponded with the Coalition for Democratic Change administration.

The senator from Margibi County stated that obtaining assets that may have been misappropriated and conducting an investigation with fairness and impartiality depend on a transparent process.

In his opinion, leaders can show that they are dedicated to maintaining the rule of law and integrity in public service by working with the Office of Assets Recovery and any other investigating agencies.

All officials, past and present, are being urged by the senator to accept the accountability process and aid the Office of Asset Recovery in their vital tasks.

Senator McGill once served in the Weah administration, and played a key role in the governing process. The Margibi senator served as minister of state for presidential affairs before his sencion by the U.S. government in 2022. The senator’s closeness to the then president made him more powerful, almost running all affairs of the country internally while, the former president allegedly focused on international engagements.

Many Liberians also accuse the Margibi Senator of embezzling money and resources from the people and of participating in other sorts of corruption. The senator was also charged with interacting with ex-warlords and providing them with positions of security in various organizations.

Monrovia, Liberia – Joshua Milton Blahyi, popularly known as General Butt Naked, is a former warlord who is now an evangelist. He has expressed support for the creation of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

A resolution advocating for the creation of the WECC was unanimously signed by more than forty members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, and forwarded to the Liberian Senate for approval in order to provide justice to the victims of the country’s civil wars.

Representative Sumo Mulbah of Montserrado County Electoral District #3 is the primary sponsor of the resolution, which was signed on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Representative Yekeh Kolubah and three other representatives are co-sponsors.

During a press conference held at his Monrovia home on Thursday, March 7, 2024, Blahyi stressed the need to confront historical injustices in order to promote the advancement of the country.

A key figure in Liberia’s civil war, General Butt Naked saw the moral and spiritual necessity of setting up a court to make those responsible for wrongdoing accountable.

He emphasized that unresolved grievances impede economic growth and stability and that impunity has a negative impact on Liberia’s prosperity.
