President Boakai Declares Wednesday, March 13, Decoration Day

Monrovia, Liberia – By proclamation, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has declared Wednesday, March 13, 2024, to be “Decoration Day.” All around the nation, people will be celebrating this national holiday.

The Proclamation is in conformity with a Legislative Act of October 24, 1916, which established the Second Wednesday in March as a National Holiday to be observed as a “Decoration Day.”

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the ceremony celebrates the country’s historical heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for their country.

According to the Proclamation, citizens and young people should be constantly reminded of significant moments in the country’s history to motivate them to take up greater acts of duty and patriotism.

The Proclamation further states that it is appropriate to designate a day to honor the memories of the deceased, perpetuating their love and hope that unite people, families, and fellow countrymen.

Given the significance of the day, the Ministry of Education has decided to commemorate it with a series of events that will increase public awareness of the contributions and deeds of great people and their loved ones. These events will include a parade led by students, government representatives, and Ministry of Education personnel to the tombs of the late President William V.S. Tubman, the state cenotaph of pioneers and an educator, at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street; additionally, there will be a procession to Warren Street, the late President Daniel B. Warner’s tomb, and then onto the Palm Grove Cemetery on Center Street, where the late Presidents Joseph Jenkins Roberts and Williams R. Tolbert rest.

The Proclamation further states that an indoor program commemorating the day, will be held at the Providence Baptist Church on Broad and Ashmun Streets commencing at ten o’ clock ante meridian.

After the indoor program, there will be a parade and laying of wreaths on the tomb sites of the selected past presidents and educators.

The Presidential Proclamation calls upon all ministries, agencies, local and international organizations, and the general public to join the Ministry of Education to organize and execute appropriate programs to make the day meaningful.

President Boakai has ordered that the National Ensign be flown at Half-Staff from all public buildings, Military Camps and private residences from 6 o’clock ante meridian to 6 o’clock post meridian.
