Monrovia, Liberia – In the fight against waste management, the City Mayor designate of Monrovia, John C. Siafa has declared waste management a national emergency which requires a deliberate collective effort in tackling it.
John Siafa urged the Legislature to include more finds in the MCC budget in order to contribute to making Monrovia a greener and healthier place for its residents at his confirmation hearing on Friday, February 26, 2024, at the Liberian Senate.
“Financial sustainability remains a key challenge for the city especially for the collection of solid waste.”
At a crucial juncture, when Monrovia is juggling conflicting agendas and little resources, the need for more financial support is made.
Overflowing trash cans, congested drainage systems, and growing environmental concerns prompted the Mayor Designate to issue a warning and stress the urgent need for coordinated action, particularly financially motivated initiatives to lessen the problems.
The MCC’s nominee for head stated in his presentation that the organization still lacks the financial resources to levy taxes and does not have sufficient, consistent, or timely municipal income sources to support its activities to the fullest extent far less than that of solid waste management.
The Senate’s Internal Affairs Committee was informed on Friday by the MCC boss-designate that, upon confirmation as mayor, the main objective of the City Government Team will be to enhance the infrastructure and standard of living for city dwellers by creating and executing a number of critically important, outcome-driven initiatives.
The mayor designate, however, praised the World Bank, the European Union, and other donors for their ongoing assistance to the industry, emphasizing that the sector is now unsustainable without more funding from the federal government.
