Monrovia, Liberia – The winners of the November 14, 2023 presidential runoff elections Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the president-elect, and Jeremiah Kpan Koung, the vice president, was yesterday, December 27, 2023, certificated by the Board of Commissioners at the National Elections Commission of Liberia.
NEC Chair, Madam Davidetta Brown Lansanah, praised all electoral stakeholders for their dedication to the peaceful conduct of the polls during her speech during the certification programme on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in Monrovia. In addition, the head of the NEC praised the work of development partners and the Liberian government in supporting the country’s 2023 presidential and legislative elections and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to holding free, fair, and transparent elections in the future.
President-elect Joseph Boakai, on his part, promised to collaborate with the populace to improve Liberia. According to Amb. Boakai, if Liberians were not able to reap the rewards of democracy, the occasion would be meaningless.
With the Unity Party and its Alliance, the incoming president pledged to steer the nation towards progress. He continued by saying that although Liberia has seen its fair share of challenges, the country has shown the world that it is capable of being different in this sea of democratic uncertainty on a regional and international scale.
“We can offer a model and set good examples; we can boast of peaceful elections and act responsibly to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition. What we celebrate today is the outcome of years of turmoil: a military coup, an aberration of democracy, betrayals, and now we can all acknowledge the reward of collective endurance. Over the next few weeks and during my inauguration, my Vice President and I will lay out the road map for progress and development. We will fully articulate the pathway to peace, development, and progress. We are grateful to our international and regional partners who supported and invested in an idea that has flourished.”
“We express our gratitude to President Weah and our political opponents, who both conceded before the final vote was tallied. “
