Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s President George Weah has officially dedicated the PHP Recreation Park in Monrovia. The most anticipated recreational complex which has a gym, two football fields, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, a kickball field exclusively for women, a café, a children’s playground, and an administration building was dedicated on Saturday, December 23, 2023.
Through a grant, the governments of Liberia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) jointly funded the park, which goes by the name Liberia Unification Park. In the immediate wake of the military coup in April 1980, 13 high-ranking government officials of the Tolbert administration were executed for public corruption; this location is marked with a memorial monument in the park.
The former president of Liberia, Madame Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, was among the high-ranking figures who attended the dedication event.
President Weah, who was speaking at the event, stated that the Park will stand for the nation’s most recent peace throughout time and that it also promotes harmony among all of its residents, regardless of their varied backgrounds.
In the interest of the nation, the recreation centre should serve as a reminder to all Liberians, the Chief Executive of Liberia continued.
According to the Liberian Leader, the PHP recreational centre cost $7 million USD.
With less than a month, the Coalition for Democratic Change government will formally gave way to the Unity Party administration, led by former vice president and incoming president Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
With the dedication of the PHP recreational sports park, the total number of sports parks built during President George Manneh Weah’s administration now stands at four: the Invincible Sports Park, Clara Town Sports Park, Doe Community Sports Park, and PHP Community Sports Park, among others.
