Pres. Weah instructs Foreign Minister Kemayah to rescind Liberia’s support to continuation of Israel-Gaza war

Monrovia, Liberia – President George Weah has instructed Foreign Minister Maxwell Kemayah to rescind a recent decision by Liberia at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, (Cop28) which supports continuation of the war in the Gaza strip.

President Weah, who appears as if, he knows nothing about the decision, said that the people who voted on behalf of Liberia at Cop28 the UN are wicked and will face the wrath of God.

While speaking at his Forky Klon Jlateh Family Fellowship Church on Sunday, along the Robert Field Highway, the outgoing Liberian leader maintained that he has always called for peace at regional and other international gatherings, adding that there is no way he can support the killings in Gaza.

The former soccer legend and peace ambassador urged the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ensure that Liberia’s vote towards supporting the continuation of war in Gaza is changed to ending the war in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, there has been an armed confrontation between Israel and Palestinian militant organisations led by Hamas[p], primarily in and around the Gaza Strip, with skirmishes also occurring in the West Bank and along the Israel-Lebanon border. The most serious military escalation in the region since the Yom Kippur War in 1973 began on that day when militant organisations launched an unexpected onslaught on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip.[59] The Israeli military launched a massive aerial bombardment assault against Gazan sites in retaliation after driving out Hamas fighters. A significant ground invasion of Gaza followed this. The ongoing fighting in Gaza and Israel, which is a subset of the larger Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is the fifth war. There had been internal displacement of about 500,000 Israelis and 1.9 million Palestinians, or about 85% of Gaza’s population, according to sources.

Hamas-led Palestinian militant organisations fired a barrage of rockets at Israel, sparking the commencement of the conflict. A total of 1,139 persons were killed when almost 3,000 militants breached the border between Gaza and Israel and assaulted civilian areas as well as Israeli military sites. These victims included 695 Israeli residents, 373 security service members, and 71 foreigners. The figure includes an unknown number of casualties from friendly fire. Around 240 Israeli nationals, military personnel, and foreigners were flown to the Gaza Strip as hostages or detainees. Hamas attributed the reasons for their strike to Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territory, the siege of the Gaza Strip, the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, the escalation of violence by Israeli settler groups, and recent escalation.
