Unity Party has withdrawn its lawsuit against Speaker Koffa

Monrovia, Liberia – The Unity Party has retracted its request for a declaratory judgement against Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, the recently elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 55th Legislature.

Following Monday’s, January 15, 2024, election between Rep. Richard Koon and Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa for Speaker of the House, the Unity Party filed a writ of declaratory judgement against Koffa, alleging that he holds dual citizenship.

In their petition, Unity Party Secretary-General Amos Tweh and National Chairperson Rev. Luther Tarpeh claimed that since Speaker Koffa is an American citizen, the court ought to void his election to represent Grand Kru County’s Electoral District #2.

According to the petition, Cllr. Koffa was further disqualified from running for elective public office in the nation since he was a citizen of the United States and had a current passport.
