Monrovia, Liberia – Former government officials, staff members, and private individuals who are still in possession of government properties have been given a 10-day ultimatum by the recently established Liberia’s Assets Recovery Property Retrieval Taskforce to voluntarily surrender them between Friday, March 22 and March 31, 2024, in order to avoid unspecified legal actions.
The taskforce’s chair, council member Edwin Kla Martin, stated that the procedure is not intended to persecute a certain group during his remarks on Thursday at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) Regular Press Briefing in Monrovia.
The recovery and retrieval procedures, he continued, would be based on solid evidence, and nobody would be wrongfully accused due to their political membership.
The taskforce also promises to respect and maintain the confidentiality of any information provided by anyone who may have information about any hidden or stolen governmental assets.
As per Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin, the objective of the President Boakai Executive Order is to initiate a fresh phase of responsible governance and accountability.
stating that the foundation for all civilized countries in the world is excellent governance and accountability. He pointed out that democracies, responsible government, the rule of law, and accountability are the cornerstones of civilized nations.
According to the Assets Recovery Chair, the state and its citizens are destroyed by corrupt nations, which are considered to be vouchers.
He claimed that extreme poverty, inadequate health care delivery systems, underdevelopment, shoddy roads, subpar educational initiatives, and low pay for system workers are the consequences of corrupt countries.
