Koffa leads Liberia’s 55th National Legislature

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The 54th legislature was formally succeeded by the 55th legislature on Monday, January 15, 2024. The 55th legislature was sworn in by newly elected legislators and their re-elected peers.

Today, January 15, 2024, the House of Representatives held a vote to choose the next House Speaker, and Cllr. Fonati Koffa was pronounced the victor. With 35 votes to Koon’s 31 votes, Cllr. Koffa prevailed. There has been fierce political fighting in the parliament between Rep. Richard Koon of the Unity Party and former Deputy Speaker Fonati Koffa of the Coilation for Democratic Change, the outgoing government.

The Liberian Senate has elected Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence as the next Senate Pro-Temporary.
