Liberia Labor Congress Urges Members to Unite

Monrovia, Liberia – To overcome the issues afflicting them, the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia has been urged to unite by the Liberia Labor Congress.

John Nyemah Nat, the secretary general of LLC, stated that only cooperation will bolster their attempts to counteract the mistreatment they are subjected to from certain of their employers.

Mr. Nat made the appeal when he delivered the keynote speech at the opening of a two-day training organized by the Domestic Worker Union of Liberia with funding from the Domestic Workers Federation International in Paynesville during the weekend.

The LLC Secretary General cautioned domestic workers to keep abreast with the protocol and provisions outlined in International Labor Organization Convention Number 189.

He stated that the LLC is still receiving complaints about poor labor practices among domestic workers and that these allegations are being investigated.

Martha Cole, the president of the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia, emphasized in her speech the necessity for the National Legislature to domesticate Convention Number 189 of the International Labor Organization.

She claimed that even though Liberia signed the international agreement, the legislation cannot be enforced as long as the national legislature does not domesticate it.

Mrs. Cole admonished the attendees to treat their superiors with respect and to never look down on or underestimate themselves.

Additionally, the president of the Liberian Domestic Workers Union gave advice to the workers not to expose themselves to sexual advances.

All member states of the International Labor Organization are required to domesticate and ratify Convention 189 in order for employers to uphold the rights of domestic workers. This convention was established in 2011 during a conference.
