Monrovia, Liberia – Prioritizing agriculture is important, according to President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who won the November 14, 2023 presidential election over former Liberian President, George Manneh Weah. In his inaugural statement on Monday, January 22, 2024, President Boakai stated that agriculture must be the main engine of Liberia’s economy since it is the most important stimulant for growth in an agro-based economy like Liberia. He added that with the focus on agriculture, there will be the creation of employment, and increase food security.
Over half of the nation’s population earns a living from agriculture, which also significantly boosts the GDP of the nation, according to President Boakai.
“It is our long-held view that, more than any other sector, agriculture is the most critical catalyst to drive growth in an agro-based economy like ours, create employment and ensure food security.”
As he prepares to lead the nation to greater heights via collaborative endeavors, President Boakai who has served in government for almost 40 years believes that developing agricultural strategies would contribute to food self-sufficiency, accelerate economic change, and lessen poverty.
