Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Boakai’s request to grant US$41.3 million for immediate use in February has been approved by the House of Representatives, preventing a possible government shutdown.
Tuesday’s decision followed a “thorough” examination by Rep. Dixon Seboe’s (District #16, Montserrado County) joint committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Public Accounts and Expenditure.
The committee, which was entrusted with examining the president’s proposal, stressed the need to maintain government functions while the 2024 budget was being finalized and submitted again.
The President stated last week that in order to prevent a government shutdown, the government’s activities must continue while the draft budget for the fiscal year 2024 has been returned and is being finalized for resubmission.
After evaluating it, the joint committee recommended adopting the report and sending it to the Senate for approval along with a resolution. A motion supporting the committee’s findings, made by Representative Edward Flomo of District #13, Montserrado County, was approved by a majority vote of 38 in favor, 2 against (including Representative Musa Hassan Bility, District #7, Nimba County), and 2 abstained during the discussions.
