Monrovia, Liberia – The People’s Republic of China’s foreign policy posture toward other countries known as the One China Policy, and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s position and adherence to it.
There has been a rise in concern about the state of the country’s relations with China in various locations due to the previous administration’s handling of China with less attention.
Speaking to the media on Monday, January 29, 2024, before giving his annual speech, President Boakai reiterated his support for the One China Policy and said his administration will make every effort to ensure that ties between the two nations are improved.
China has proven to be a dependable and strategic ally of Liberia, offering significant assistance in numerous areas of the nation’s development agenda, according to the president.
“We are committed to the One China Policy, and we have assured the Chinese about our commitment, and this, we do not intend to change.”
As per his statement, the People’s Republic of China has significantly contributed to Liberia’s development program, primarily in the areas of infrastructure and enhancing the educational capabilities of the youth.
President Xi Jinping designated the Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference’s National Committee as his Special Envoy in order to witness President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s inauguration. During the formal visit, President Boakai reiterated that he was in charge of the Senate during the One China Policy’s enactment into Liberian law and that he planned to enforce and honor the legislation. The President further noted that China has succeeded in bringing over 800 million people out of poverty, demonstrating its commitment to upholding their rights. Liberia wants to use this expertise to help lift its people out of poverty.
China has made major contributions to the country’s infrastructural transformation since the end of the civil conflict and the restoration of democratic governance. It has committed resources to numerous important projects.
Recall that China intervened in the health sector and other areas in addition to funding the building of two more Capitol Building annexes, including the well-known Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex. A bad rapport with the previous administration resulted in the suspension or temporary cancellation of numerous projects.
