The Village Super League in Rongjiang County has once again proven to be one of the most unique traditional sporting competitions in the world, celebrated not only for football but also for its rich cultural festivities.

According to our reporter, who covered the 2026 friendly matches, the competition is designed to unite local communities. Each participating region showcases its cultural heritage, demonstrating the diversity and uniqueness of China.

Since its inception in the 1940s, the tournament has evolved into a symbol of cultural expression through sport. The 2026 edition combined football matches with vibrant cultural performances, drawing large crowds of locals eager to celebrate and appreciate their traditions.

The competition is notable for its inclusiveness, featuring players of all ages. Historically, the oldest participant has been 56 years old, while the youngest has been just 12.

The league has also attracted international attention, with former Ballon d’Or winners such as Kaká and Fabio Cannavaro having participated in past events.

Liberia’s Participation

In the 2026 edition, a 15-player Liberian select team—each representing one of the country’s counties—took part under the banner “County Meet All Star.” Their participation was widely seen as a symbol of strengthening “people-to-people” relations between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China.

The Liberian team recorded an emphatic 17–1 victory over Guangxi Qinglong Weidian in their opening match. However, this result sparked criticism on social media, with some questioning why a young and promising team was competing against what appeared to be less competitive opposition.

Following further understanding of the tournament’s cultural purpose, many critics acknowledged that the competition is not solely about elite performance, but about unity, heritage, and exchange.

Liberia later secured a 5–2 win over Leishan Langde Miao Village Team, completing a successful outing in matches played over a weekend in April 2026.

Cultural Exchange and Experiences

Beyond football, the 19-member Liberian delegation—including players, coaches, and technical staff—described the trip as an invaluable cultural learning experience.

They visited Guiyang, where they toured modern digital and artificial intelligence centers, gaining insight into China’s technological advancements. They also explored historical and cultural sites in Rongjiang County, including minority communities that maintain strong traditional lifestyles.

One notable observation was the emphasis placed on women in certain local cultures, as well as the community’s commitment to preserving traditional housing despite modernization efforts supported by the government.

The delegation also experienced scenic boat rides reminiscent of those often depicted in Chinese films and visited ancient trees—some over a thousand years old.

Additionally, they saw major infrastructure projects, including one of the world’s longest bridges, leaving them impressed by China’s engineering capabilities.

The team also visited the Guizhou Institute of Technology, where they interacted with 24 Liberian students studying there. The students showcased their Chinese language skills through songs and presentations, highlighting the educational opportunities available.

Key Takeaways

The delegation described China as highly developed, with friendly and welcoming people. They emphasized that the experience went far beyond football, offering insights into culture, unity, and technological progress.

The team returned to Liberia on May 4, 2026, expressing gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for facilitating the trip. Delegation head Amos Kollie praised the opportunity and expressed hope for continued collaboration and opportunities for young Liberians.

He repeatedly noted that experiencing Chinese culture firsthand during the tournament revealed its uniqueness and depth.

The first open-air wheelchair basketball court in Liberia’s history was built by the Liberia Wheelchair Basketball Federation with assistance from the Chinese government. The court’s judgment put an end to the debate over disabled individuals’ prohibition from using other facilities. On Friday, February 3, 2023, the project, which cost thousands of US dollars, was formally dedicated. The project is situated at Paynesville’s renowned SKD Sports Complex.

Speaking at the occasion, the People’s Republic of China’s ambassador, Ren Yisheng, praised the several projects his country is currently working on in Liberia. With the two countries’ connection, Ambassador Yisheng thinks China will continue to play a friendly role to make sure Liberia understands the friendship. The project is located at the famous SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville.

“Given that there are up to 85 million disabled persons in China, we don’t regret doing this for the Liberian disabled population, and while this is a minor project, I think we will have a better one in the future.”

First open-air wheelchair basketball court
Founder and president of the Liberia Wheelchair Basketball Federation, Ambassador Lionel Johnson, stated that he is currently the happiest man in Liberia and said that it is beyond his wildest dreams to see a court constructed for his fellow disabled people. He asserts that the federation will hold its inaugural national league with six clubs due to the well-prepared facilities.

“I must express my gratitude to the government of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China for their continued support to our federation. As you can see, we have a brand-new facility to perform all of our activities here in peace, which makes me quite delighted.”

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Zeogar Wilson said the government does not provide funding for federations but subsidies. He added that federations and associations lobbying for their own sponsors is welcome.

“We will play our part as a government, but remember, we can’t do everything for all the federations and associations.”

Womi Tarpeh was named Fan of the Year, while DOC Africa received Corporate Sponsor of the Year honors.

Meanwhile, LBA President Abraham B. Samukai praised stakeholders, referees, the executive committee, the Liberia National Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their commitment to basketball in Liberia.

In his address, Samukai described the 2024/2025 season as “a remarkable journey marked by progress, resilience, and historic milestones.”

“This season, the Liberia Basketball Association successfully hosted the 2025 National League across four divisions — First Division, Women’s Division, Second Division, and Third Division. The smooth organization of competitions across these categories demonstrates our administrative capacity and commitment to inclusive participation,” he said.

Highlighting international achievements, he noted, “We proudly hosted the FIBA U-16 Zone 3 Qualifiers for both male and female categories. I am especially proud that our female team made us proud, while our U-16 male team achieved a historic milestone by ranking 9th in Africa — a significant leap that signals the rising potential of our young athletes.”

On governance, he added, “We held a successful Congress where a new Constitution was approved, strengthening our governance framework. Additionally, a budget was endorsed, laying the financial roadmap for our operations and development agenda.”

Samukai emphasized capacity building, stating, “This year, we trained 30 coaches who successfully qualified as FIBA Level One coaches. Furthermore, one referee was certified as a local FIBA trainer, positioning Liberia to independently build the capacity of our match officials.”

He also disclosed that construction of dressing rooms had begun to improve facilities for players and officials, and that Liberia was represented at the FIBA Congress in Bahrain to ensure the country’s voice is heard in international basketball governance.

However, he acknowledged existing challenges.

“The development of basketball in Liberia continues to suffer from inadequate support. Financial constraints have significantly limited our ability to execute programs at full capacity. The Association remains highly indebted to vendors following the hosting of international tournaments—obligations we must honor,” he stated.

He further stressed the need for sustained investment in technical development and infrastructure, noting that coaches, referees, statisticians, and table officials require continuous training to meet international standards.

“These constraints are real — but they are not insurmountable. Basketball in Liberia is growing. Our youth are passionate. Our players are talented. Our administrators are committed,” Samukai declared.

He called for stronger partnerships and collaboration from government, the private sector, and development partners.

“As we close this league season, let us remember that basketball is more than a game. It is discipline. It is unity. It is opportunity. It is national pride,” he concluded.

For his part, Deputy Minister for Sports, G. Andy Quamie appealed to the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) to reconsider the suspension of the NPA Pythons for failing to honor their final game in the best-of-five championship series against the LPRC Oilers.

The deputy minister called for reconciliation and dialogue, emphasizing the importance of unity and sportsmanship in the development of basketball in Liberia.

“Basketball is about discipline and respect for the rules, but it is also about inclusion and second chances,” Quamie said. “I am appealing to the leadership of the LBA to look into the matter concerning the NPA Pythons and consider reinstating the team in the interest of fairness and the growth of the game.”

He noted that while regulations must be upheld, the broader objective should be to strengthen the league and maintain healthy competition.

The Deputy Minister further assured the Association of the Ministry’s continued support in promoting discipline, dialogue, and development within the sport.

The much-talked-about World Foundation International (WFI) Multi-Purpose Agriculture Cooperative has officially been launched under the theme “Feed the Nation: Rescue Farmers.”

The colorful launching ceremony took place on Friday, February 6, 2026, in Monrovia, bringing together scores of farmers, agricultural stakeholders, government officials, and development partners from across Liberia.

Launching the cooperative on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Deputy Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of State, Mr. Anthony Kesselley described agriculture as a central pillar of the president’s development agenda.

“President Boakai places high priority on agriculture because it is the backbone of national development and food security,” Deputy Minister Kesselley said.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with the government’s vision to empower farmers, increase local food production, and reduce our dependence on imported food.”

He emphasized that the president remains deeply concerned about the welfare of Liberian farmers and has outlined a clear roadmap aimed at revitalizing and modernizing the agricultural sector.

“We must move from subsistence farming to sustainable agribusiness,” he added. “Liberia has fertile land and hardworking farmers. What we need now is structure, support, and strategic investment — and this cooperative is a step in the right direction.”

Providing an overview of the cooperative’s vision and objectives, the Board Chairman of WFI, Dr. John Wulu, highlighted the urgent need for transformation within Liberia’s agricultural sector.

“Our farmers face enormous challenges, including limited access to modern farming tools, financing, technical training, and reliable markets,” Dr. Wulu stated. “This cooperative was established to bridge those gaps and create real opportunities for growth and productivity.”

Dr. Wulu explained that the cooperative aims to organize farmers into a unified structure that will enhance productivity, improve bargaining power, and facilitate access to essential resources.

“This is not just a project; it is a movement to restore dignity to Liberian farmers and reposition agriculture as a profitable and sustainable sector,” he said.

Also speaking at the program, the Chief Executive Officer of the cooperative, Lincoln Cooper, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting farmers through innovative programs, capacity-building initiatives, and partnerships with both local and international stakeholders.

“Our goal is to increase food production, enhance farmers’ livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s economic development,” the CEO noted. “Through collaboration, modern farming techniques, and strategic investment, we can feed our nation and create employment opportunities for thousands of Liberians.”

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that, once fully operational and successfully implemented, the initiative will significantly strengthen Liberia’s food security and generate substantial employment within the agricultural sector.

Observers believe that if the project achieves its intended objectives, it could drastically reduce — and potentially end — Liberia’s heavy reliance on imported food commodities.

With renewed commitment from both government and private stakeholders, the launch of the World Foundation International Multi-Purpose Agriculture Cooperative marks a significant step toward transforming Liberia’s agricultural landscape and advancing the national agenda of self-sufficiency and economic empowerment.

The Senior Management Team of One Health EHR Africa, led by Dr. John T. Wulu, Jr., Board Chair, and Mr. Richmond Appleton, Executive Board Chair and President & CEO, met with the management of ELWA Hospital in Liberia on Friday, February 6, 2026, to discuss the introduction of a digital health record system.

The meeting, which lasted a little over an hour, was attended by Mrs. Rebecca Epp, Chief Medical Officer of ELWA Hospital, along with other senior members of the hospital’s management team.

During the session, the One Health EHR Africa team delivered a detailed presentation outlining the institution’s roadmap, objectives, and proposed implementation strategy for the electronic health record (EHR) system.

The presentation emphasized how transitioning from paper-based records to a digital platform would improve efficiency, enhance data accuracy, strengthen patient tracking, and elevate overall healthcare delivery.

In his remarks, Dr. John Wulu underscored the importance of modernization in the healthcare sector.

“Digital transformation is no longer optional in healthcare. It is essential for improving patient outcomes, ensuring accountability, and strengthening data management systems,” Dr. Wulu stated.

“Our goal is to support ELWA Hospital in building a secure, efficient, and sustainable electronic health record system.”

Mr. Richmond Appleton, President & CEO of One Health EHR Africa, also highlighted the benefits of adopting the digital system.

“An effective electronic health record system enhances service delivery, reduces paperwork, and minimizes errors associated with manual record-keeping,” Appleton said.

“We are committed not only to deploying the system but also to providing comprehensive training for staff to ensure a smooth transition.”

He further assured hospital management that capacity building would be a key component of the project.

“Training healthcare workers to confidently operate the system is central to its success. We will work closely with your team to ensure all personnel meet the required standards for implementation.”

Responding on behalf of ELWA Hospital, Chief Medical Officer Mrs. Rebecca Epp welcomed the initiative while offering constructive observations.

“We appreciate the vision behind this initiative and recognize the potential benefits of a digital health record system,” Mrs. Epp said.

“However, successful implementation will require careful planning, staff readiness, infrastructure assessment, and long-term technical support.”
She added that while the hospital is open to innovation, sustainability and adaptability to the hospital’s specific needs would be critical.

Also speaking at the high-level EHR presentation meeting, Mr. James Freeman Garway, administrator of ELWA Hospital, described the initiative as a significant opportunity.

“It would be a wonderful opportunity for ELWA Hospital to be part of the One Health EHR platform, enabling our healthcare providers to maintain and monitor patient records electronically,” Garway said.

The meeting concluded with both institutions expressing optimism about future collaboration and agreeing to conduct further technical assessments and consultations prior to full implementation.

Anticipation is growing across West Africa as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission prepares to convene a high-level regional consultation on the Digital Economy and New Technologies, a flagship engagement under ECOWAS Vision 2050.

Among the leading experts formally invited to contribute is Peterking Quaye, Regional Director of the West Africa ICT Action Network (WAICTANet), representing Liberia.

The invitation underscores the ECOWAS

Commission’s recognition of Quaye’s technical expertise, policy leadership, and sustained engagement in internet governance, digital transformation, cybersecurity, and information integrity at national, sub-regional, and regional levels. His participation places Liberia and the Mano River Union (MRU) at the center of discussions shaping the digital future of West Africa.

Shaping Power, Technology, and Trust in the Digital Age

The upcoming consultation in Lagos will bring together policymakers, regulators, media practitioners, civil society organizations, and technical experts to examine how artificial intelligence (AI), communication technologies, social media, and digital transformation are influencing regional integration, peace and security, economic development, and public opinion across ECOWAS member states.

With digital platforms increasingly shaping elections, civic discourse, youth mobilization, and cross-border narratives, ECOWAS is seeking expert input to inform a coherent regional approach—one that promotes innovation while safeguarding stability, sovereignty, and citizens’ rights.

Quaye’s invitation reflects his long-standing advocacy for responsible, inclusive, and African-centered digital policy.

He has played a key role in coordinating national and regional Internet Governance Forums and leading research and capacity-building initiatives on data protection, AI governance, and cybersecurity, particularly in fragile and post-conflict digital environments.

“The ECOWAS Vision 2050 agenda will be realized—or undermined—in our digital spaces,” Quaye said ahead of the consultation.

“This dialogue is an opportunity to ensure that AI, media platforms, and digital technologies strengthen regional unity and development rather than deepen fragmentation and external dependency.”

Addressing Regional Gaps and Emerging Risks
Quaye is expected to contribute insights drawn from Liberia and the MRU region, where rapid mobile adoption, youth-driven digital engagement, and exposure to information disorder highlight both the promise and risks of the digital age.

Across West Africa, the digital economy is expanding rapidly—driven by fintech, e-commerce, online media, and data-driven services—yet significant gaps remain.

Cybersecurity readiness is uneven, data governance frameworks are fragmented, and access to digital infrastructure and skills varies widely between urban and rural communities.

At the same time, intensified international media competition and coordinated online campaigns targeting ECOWAS audiences have increased pressure on public trust, narrative sovereignty, and information integrity.

The consultation aims to address these challenges by fostering regional consensus on AI governance, cybersecurity cooperation, information integrity, and inclusive digital infrastructure.

“West Africa must not only consume digital technologies; we must shape how they are governed and used,” Quaye added.
“This consultation is about defining our collective digital destiny.”

A Pivotal Moment for ECOWAS Digital Policy
As ECOWAS prepares to host this pivotal dialogue, the Commission is encouraging broad participation from governments, the private sector, media, academia, and civil society.

The inclusion of experts like Peterking Quaye signals a strong commitment to multi-stakeholder engagement and to ensuring that regional digital policy reflects on-the-ground realities across all ECOWAS sub-regions.

The Lagos consultation is expected to lay critical groundwork for future ECOWAS policy positions on AI, digital transformation, and communication governance, making it a must-engage moment for stakeholders invested in a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital future for West Africa.

The Community Sustainable Development Platform (CSDP), in partnership with Women & Youth Development International (WYDI), has convened a high-level coordination meeting with traditional leaders, local authorities, and neighboring communities of Weilor Town—marking a major milestone in the Customary Land Formalization (CLF) process in Grand Cape Mount County.

The meeting, held on Sunday, January 13, 2025, as part of Phase I of the CLF process, focused on community self-identification, a legally mandated requirement for communities seeking formal recognition of customary land ownership under Liberia’s 2018 Land Rights Act.

Participants included elders, representatives of surrounding communities, women and youth leaders, persons with disabilities, and land governance actors. The engagement aimed to promote inclusion, transparency, stronger coordination, and the prevention of land-related disputes.

Introducing the initiative, CSDP Team Lead Alfred B. Kiawu formally presented the project titled “Supporting Communities for Inclusive Land Governance (SCILG).” According to Mr. Kiawu, the project is being jointly implemented by CSDP, WYDI, and the people of Weilor Town.

“This initiative is currently being implemented without direct donor funding,” Mr. Kiawu disclosed. “We are relying heavily on community commitment and organizational collaboration while continuing engagements with development partners and donors to ensure the full completion of the CLF process.”

Providing technical insight, County Land Administrator of the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), Mr. Frank M. Sheriff, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the CLF process and its legal framework.

“The Land Rights Act recognizes four categories of land ownership in Liberia and clearly outlines the rights of customary land-owning communities,” Mr. Sheriff explained. “It also provides safeguards for women, youth, and vulnerable groups, establishes mechanisms for conflict prevention, and defines the

complementary roles of traditional leaders and local authorities.”

Also addressing the gathering, Grand Cape Mount County Superintendent, Hon. Folley Kiatamba, applauded CSDP and WYDI for their support to Weilor Town, emphasizing the importance of the CLF process.

“The Customary Land Formalization process remains the only legal pathway for communities to secure ownership of their customary land,” Superintendent Kiatamba stated. “I encourage community members, including neighboring towns and villages, to actively participate through awareness and capacity-building activities.”

Superintendent Kiatamba further pledged his full support for the initiative and assured participants of continued technical assistance from the Liberia Land Authority.

“The LLA, through the County Land Administrator, will provide continuous technical guidance to ensure a smooth and successful CLF process,” he added.

The coordination meeting reaffirmed strong stakeholder commitment to inclusive land governance, peaceful coexistence, and secure land tenure—placing Weilor Town on a clear and lawful path toward formal recognition of its customary land rights.

A nine-member delegation of the Liberia Tennis Federation (LTF), comprising players and coaches, has safely arrived in Lomé, Togo, to participate in the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) West African Junior Team Championships.

The delegation departed Liberia on January 10, 2026, via Road and transited through Ivory Coast and arrived in Lomé on January 11, 2026.

While in Togo, Liberia’s Under-16 and Under-14 national tennis teams will compete in the championship, scheduled to run from January 15 to 23, 2026. The tournament features nine participating countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, and host nation Togo.

Liberia’s youthful delegation includes the following players:
Under-16 Team
• Boys: Levi Baker, Bartee Karr
• Girls: Favor Gbana, Dorcas Moore
Under-14 Team
• Boys: Answer Nyennweh, Benjamin Kandakai, Washington Shajah

The delegation is accompanied by Jeffrey Martin (Assistant Coach) and Yaweh Innis-Medic.

The championships will feature both individual and team competitions, including singles and doubles matches for boys and girls in the Under-14 and Under-16 age categories.

The tournament serves as a key development platform under the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) junior circuit, providing young athletes with international exposure, ranking opportunities, and valuable competitive experience.

This competition marks the Liberia Tennis Federation’s third international appearance in recent months, following participation in the Youth Olympics in Angola in December 2025 and the Youth Championship Tournament in Accra, Ghana, in October 2025.

According to Paul Jamal King, President of the Liberia Tennis Federation, the continuous participation of young athletes in international competitions aligns with his long-standing vision of rebranding and revitalizing tennis in Liberia.

The National County Sports Meet remains Liberia’s biggest sporting festival despite controversies surrounding the competition this season, including protests, reported allegations of match-fixing, and low attendance.

Amid these challenges, several counties continue to celebrate the progress of their teams in both kickball and football.

On Sunday, January 11, 2026, excitement filled Grand Kru County as supporters watched both their kickball and football teams advance to the semifinals.

One of Grand Kru’s sons, Cyrus Saygbe, shared his excitement while speaking with members of the sporting press, expressing optimism about the county’s chances of winning silverware.

“Our roads from here in Grand Kru County are passable, and we want the rest of Liberia to come and celebrate with us,” Saygbe said.

He added that the county’s leadership has been very supportive, a factor he believes has strengthened their chances of success.

“As you can see, I am here for every match to support our teams as they push toward victory, which is coming along gradually. Today, we have reached the semifinals, and we are now preparing for this stage by taking the competition one game at a time,” he said.

Meanwhile, the semifinal stage of the County Meet is scheduled for this Wednesday at the SKD, featuring both kickball and football.

In kickball, Margibi will face Grand Kru in the first semifinal at 2:00 p.m., followed by Grand Cape Mount taking on Nimba at 3:00 p.m.

In the football category, Nimba and Margibi will clash in the first semifinal at 5:00 p.m., while Grand Cape Mount and Grand Kru will battle to determine the second finalist.
