Monrovia,Liberia: The Deputy Commissioner General for Technical Affairs at the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), Decontee King-Sackie, now heads the institution as Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
King-Sackie assumes the leadership of the LRA based upon the expiry of the tenure of the Commissioner-General, Elfrieda Stewart Tamba.
Tamba’s four-year tenure ended June 30.
According to Section 21.2 of the 2013 Act establishing the LRA, in the absence of the Commissioner General, the Deputy for Technical Affairs shall serve as officer-in-charge of the Authority.
A source told the Liberia News Agency that Madam Tamba has been absent from office since the expiry of her tenure.
In recent weeks, there have been a number of anti- and pro demonstrations in the vicinity of the LRA headquarters by placard-carrying people calling on President George Weah to replace Tamba, while another group advocated for the President to retain her.
By law, the LRA Commissioner General is primarily responsible to administer and supervise the execution of the Liberia Revenue Code, the direction and day-to-day management and administration of the Authority, among other functions.
The LRA is officially clothed with the authority to fairly, transparently and equally administer the assessment and collection of revenues to which the revenue law shall apply, and deposit all amounts assessed and collected into the Consolidated Fund and ensure compliance with the Revenue Code and regulations.
The LRA Commissioner General is appointed by the President of Liberia and confirmed by the Liberian Senate.
