Pres. Weah Signals possible Terroristic threat on Liberia

Monrovia-President George Weah has alarmed over a possible terroristic threat on the peace of the country.

Speaking at the EU Development Summit Day in Brussels, the Chief Executive stated that since Liberia accepted to participate in the UN peace Mission in Mali there may be terroristic attack on the fragile peace.

He wants the EU and other international organizations to help buttress the country’s security sector to ensure the safety of Liberians and others in the sub-region.

According to him, the country risks what he called retaliatory strikes from forces against peace in the world.

“In the face of this new threat, we are asking the European Union in conjunction with the United Nations to work with our security sector to ensure the safety of our citizens and residents within our borders,” he said.

President Weah’s assertion comes several weeks after the British government issued a travel alert on Liberia, citing that possible terrorist attack cannot be ruled out.

The British government in May warned its citizens traveling to Liberia that “Terrorist attacks in Liberia can’t be ruled out. As seen in Mali, Côte D’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, terrorist groups continue to mount attacks on beach resorts, hotels, cafés and restaurants visited by foreigners. You should be vigilant in these locations and avoid any crowded places and public gatherings or events. There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”

The Liberia National Police condemned a FrontPageAfrica publication highlighting the warning, noting that the information was misleading.

But the President’s confirmation and subsequent plea for assistance questions how prepared the Liberian security is to curb these threats, especially in the wake of the pullout of the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

President George Weah  however pledged his administration’s commitment to the fight against sexual and gender based violence at the ongoing European Development Day summit.

The Liberian President who emphasized the importance of women also added that women remain cardinal to the growth and development of any country.

the Liberian Leader recognized the progress made by the EU to achieve gender equality, but emphasized that much still needs to be done to confront the challenges.
“In today’s evolving world, there has been major progress made in some countries with the gender equality. However, in other countries, the rights of women and girls remain a major challenge; especially in developing countries,” the President noted.
The Liberian Leader said it would be difficult to achieve total development and meaningful growth when women and girls are not captured into national plans, and/or are excluded from participating in economic activities.
“How can we maintain peace and stability, if our women and girls are being raped and abused,” the President averred. According to President Weah, in spite of global efforts to close economic gabs, eradication of gender-based violence still remains a major problem especially among young people.
“In my own country Liberia, issues of gender equality, sexual abuse and violence continue to be a major challenge. As President of Liberia, it is my responsibility to lead the efforts to address and rectify these glaring disparities in our social and economic environment.
But beyond that, I will like to inform you that my commitment and dedication to this cause is also on a personal level. It comes from deep and longstanding appreciation and respect for the value of women and girls in our society which I incurred through my childhood upbringing.”
