13 police officers under probe for allegedly shooting at Kingsville protesters

Report by Trokon Augustus Freeman_www.trokonfreeman@yahoo.com

Abraham Toomey, the boy who was shot when Police reportedly opened fire to disperse protesters in Kingsville on Monday has finally died at the Duside Hospital in Margibi County.

The citizens were protesting to draw government’s attention to the suspected ritual killing of two children.

The kids 9 and 10, mysterious disappeared and were later discovered dead with body parts extracted.

The citizens said, they were moved to protest because of persistent delay by the Police to conclude an investigation into the matter.

Eye witnesses told OK FM the 17 year old was sitting by the roadside roasting corn to sell when a police bullet struck him as he apparently attempted to run away from the confrontation between police and protesters.

One other person who was allegedly fired in the leg is still in hospital.

Moses: Police began investigation

Police spokesman Moses Carter told OK FM, Thirteen Police officers are being investigated in connection with the incident.

Although Carter did not say when the investigation will be concluded, he assured that officers held liable for the incident will be dealt with in keeping with law.

“The Liberian National Police extends condolences to family members of the late Toomey. Having said that , I would want to urge member of  the public to remain very calm as the LNP continues this investigation that has been launched, since the incident in Kingsville.

We have subjected our officers to a professional standard investigation, and we might be talking about 13 to 17 officers who will have to present their statement each to account for what happen in Kingsville.

Meanwhile, Lofa County Senator Steve Zargo has said the shooting incident in Kingsville that led to one person dead and two others seriously wounded should not be investigated by the police alone.

Senator Zargo wants the team of investigators to include both police and non police officers.

He told the OK Morning Rush Wednesday, that the new police Act preclude the Liberia National Police from investigating itself once its reputation is being questioned.

Zargo: Civilian Complain Commission

If the police did shoot without using other alternatives, then, that is wrong. Howbeit, to be able to make final determination, let’s give them chance to do a proper investigation.

But again, under the new police act, the police herself is not to do that kind of investigation when their reputation and action is caught in question. We have placed in the new police act what you called “Civilian Complain Commission”.

So, I hope you have the Justice Minister, the Police director and other security actors to see how far they have gone with this because, by now we should constitute the Civilian Complain Commission; the Liberian Bar Association should be a member, federation of Liberian youth, different civil organizations, so you can’t have them be the referee and the player at the same time.

According to senator Zargo, the new Act calls for the setting up of a Civilian Complaint Commission that is charged with the responsibility of investigating complaints against police.
