MONROVIA: The Press Union of Liberia is calling on the Weah Administration and the public to act conscientiously within the confines of the laws in the wake of investigation surrounding the reported managerial iniquities in the financial handling of assets of the state.
In its first public statement on the confusion as to the whereabouts of LD16 billion, the Union wants the fundamental rights of all Liberians to be scrupulously protected in the raging debate on the violated sanctity of the national treasury.
Only a free space where diverse views on the matter can flourish in any form legally acceptable will fast track the search for a solution to the current national embarrassment that has befallen the country, the PUL stressed.
Sixteen billion Liberian dollars (U$104) accounts for a little over five percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which stood at U$2,158 as of 2017.
Meanwhile the Press Union is calling on the Liberia National Police (LNP) to provide Journalist Philibert Brown security for the duration of the investigation on the status of the Liberian Billions.
Mr. Brown who first broke the story dubbed “the missing container” has reported threats against his life and subsequently restricted movements of members of his family for fear of being attack.
The Union is urging Journalist Brown and the entire Journalism Community to remain forcefully fearless in the discharge of their duty to the country but wants all journalists to promptly alert authorities on safety issues.
The Union insists that public good must continue to be at the center of journalistic service to the state, warning journalists to vehemently avoid being embroiled in the mediocracy which has for so long marred conduct of official public business in Liberia.
