Monrovia,Liberia—House speaker Dr Bhofal Chambers has come in defense of the ongoing reconstruction of President George Weah’s 9th Street residence near the Atlantic Ocean in Monrovia.
There has been public condemnation regarding the reconstruction of President’s with some describing it as insensitive and untimely.
But Speaker Chambers argued that he sees nothing wrong with the decision of the President to reconstruct his home as it will ease government’s burden of hosting guests.
Representative Chambers became an avid critic of President Sirleaf after he defected from the Unity Party and joined the CDC following a row over a controversial concession agreement in Maryland.
Many see him as a critical voice against bad governance but it is becoming increasingly unclear what his approach will be against a government that has now won him much coveted speaker post.
Chambers was elected by his colleagues on a white ballot after his lone contender, former Deputy Speaker Hans Barchue, who had earlier declared his intention for the post, abandoned his quest just a day before the election.
Chambers is an executive committee member of the Coalition for Democratic Change. He was first elected in 2005 on the Unity Party ticket at a time when he was a staunch supporter of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He and Sirleaf fell out of favor in 2011 before he joined CDC.
