Monrovia,Liberia—-The Ministry of Internal Affairs Tuesday initiated a two-day National Conference on Reconciliation under the theme Local Voices for inclusive Governance.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf said the Conference is part of the Government and the United Nations commitments documented in the Liberia Peace building Plan that was jointly developed in early 2017 in response to the UN Security Council Resolution 23-33.
According to an Internal Affairs Ministry Release, Minister Sirleaf emphasized that the Government acknowledges that reconciliation is the vehicle for sustained conflict transformation and long-term stability.
The release added that in 2017, The UN mission in Liberia, UNMIL supported the Liberia Peace-building Office at the Ministry of Internal Affairs to design a County level initiative to strengthen Reconciliation at the community level.
This plan however, resulted in UNMIL funding eight county reconciliation dialogues which resulted into county visions and five-year plans for reconciliation.
Meanwhile, the conference is being attended by high profile government officials and the UN secretary General’s Special Representative Farid Zarif along with his Deputy for rule of law.
