The vacancies were created as a result of the elections of then Senators George Weah and Jewel Howard-Taylor as President and Vice President of Liberia in the 2017 elections.

Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution calls for the holding of elections in 90 days in the case where there is a vacancy in the legislature, a time-line that has since been defaulted upon by the government.

Reading the joint resolution in plenary Tuesday, Senate Deputy Secretary Genevieve Massaquoi said the holding of the senatorial by-elections will give citizens of Montserrado and Bong equal representation.

The set date for the holding of the elections means that the National Elections Commission can now proceed with the holding of the elections in the two counties.

There has been many criticisms from the public detailing the Weah-Taylor’s administration failure to conduct the by-elections in accordance with Constitutional time  frame which is a violation of the Country’s by-laws.

Meanwhile the Liberian Senate also concurred to ratify the United Nations Framework on Climate Change of the Paris Agreement.

The ratification of the agreement proffered by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs will enable Liberia obtain more benefits including the protection of its green forest which is the largest in West Africa.

A motion of agreement was made by Lofa Senator George Tengbeh after the reading of the Paris Agreement by Deputy Secretary Geneve Massaquoi.
