LFA confirms Sierra Leone friendly

Monrovia-The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has confirmed that the Lone Star will face the Leone Star in an Independence Day friendly on 22nd July in Monrovia.

LFA Secretary General Emmanuel Dean told sports reporter Wednesday, that Deputy Minister of Sports, Andy Quamie mandated the FA to arrange the friendly between the two nations.

Liberia will celebrate its 172nd Independence on 26th July.

Although Dean said his bosses failed to respond to the communication, he still wrote the Sierra Leonean Football Association (SLFA) and that they have consented.

The request for the friendly was reportedly made by Chief Patron of Sports and Soccer Legend George Manneh Weah.

This year Independence Celebration will be the first of six expected under the tenure of Weah, who set record last year when he became the first soccer star to be elected President of a Nation in Africa.

President Weah has reportedly phoned Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio about the match.

Liberia has been without a National Team Coach for more than seven months after James Debbah was suspended indefinitely by LFA President Musa Hassan Bility last November.

The country does not have a current National Team and it is not clear who will take charge of the country ahead of the friendly.

Liberia is expected to take on DR Congo in September in the 2019 Africa Nations Cup qualifier.
Liberia and Sierra Leone have met fifteen times that including ten international friendly encounters.

Liberia with the most wins eight, four draws and three defeats including the 1986 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers (2-1 to Liberia on aggregates) and the 2001 Fifa World Cup doubleheader the Lone Stars won 1-0 at home and away.

Liberia v Sierra Leone last encounter was on 05 June 2017 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium which was won by Liberia 1-0.
