Prison blocs sports tournament kicks off in Monrovia

Monrovia, Liberia-Assistant Justice Minister for Correction, Eddie Tarawali has described recreation as an important element in the rehabilitation inmates at prison facilities.

Minister Tarawali said recreation or sports helps to reduce the stress levels of prisoners.

According to him, prisoners need activities that will make them feel part of society despite their action which lead them into imprisonment.

Mr. Tarawali says poor condition of inmates and lack of clothing, among others, are issues that need to be addressed, adding that “those conditions are surmountable with teamwork.”

The Youthful Assistant Minister spoke during the weekend following a football match between Prisoners and correction officers in Monrovia.

The game is part of ongoing inter prison bloc league under the watch of the Ministry of Justice.

Some of the prisoners who spoke to reporters at the end of the match expressed excitement for the initiative.
