Monrovia-The Liberian House of Representatives has constituted an eight man committee to finalize issues of mistreatment and employment at Sime Darby Plantation in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
A recent video circulating on social media showed an employee of the company being torture for allegedly stealing a palm bunch.
The decision Tuesday comes in the wake of the company’s twin appearances before that august body to exonerate itself from allegations of torture and the employment of foreign nationals at top managerial positions, instead of Liberians.
In a motion proffered by Lofa County Representative Francis Nyumalin that saw the witnesses stay under oath and the contempt charge uplifted, the committee was mandated to dig out the facts surrounding the allegations made.
Before the conclusion of the hearing, Sime Darby General Manager David Parker openly apologized for not providing detailed information during the last hearing.
Manager Parker added that his position was relative to an ongoing Police investigation into the matter.
He again distanced the company from acts of torture and brutality in its business operations.
But Representatives Edwin Snowe and Larry Younquoi maintained that the apology provided by the company manager was not sufficient to surpass the allegations of torture among others.
Representatives Snowe and Younquoi decried the living conditions of Liberians in the employs of the company.
They have pushed for a repeal of Sime Darby concession agreement.
