Pro-poor government breaches constitution by failing to hold senatorial by-elections in time frame

Monrovia-The National Elections Commission has disclosed that it cannot conduct the Senatorial by-elections in Montserrado and Bong Counties in keeping with constitutional time frame due to the lack of adequate funding.

The NEC earlier set Tuesday May 8, 2018 as the date for the conduct of the Senatorial by-elections in the two counties.

The by-elections in the two counties come as a result of vacancies created by the election of current President George Weah and Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor.

Addressing a News Conference at NEC Headquarters in Sinkor Tuesday, NEC Chairman Jerome Kokoryah termed the untimely holding of elections in the two counties as a breach of the Constitution.

According to Chairman Kokoryah, the Liberian Government has made available five hundred thousand United States Dollars out of the 2.7 million US dollars agreed upon between the National Legislature and the National Elections Commission.

He stated that the Liberian Government has given no assurances to NEC as to when the remaining balance of the 2.7 million US dollars will be made available.

He at the same time mentioned that it will be in the purview for the Legislature to set a new date for the holding of the senatorial by-elections on grounds that NEC does not have the constitutional authority to do so.
