Liberia: ECOWAS Delegation Promotes Free Movement at Liberia’s Borders with Sierra Leone and Guinea

 MONROVIA: A high power delegation from the Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS has called on joint securities assigned at the border with Liberia and Guinea to combat continues harassment of commuters at the border.

Speaking during  an  ECOWAS  visit to the border, Gompa Detail Commander of the Liberia Imagination Services, Lieutenant Colonel Louis Dennis, explained difficulties for Liberian travelers to freely enter Guinea amidst their legitimate documents.

She said marketers are often complained of being irritated on a daily basic by Guinean officers, a situation she termed as embarrassing.

The head of Liberia’s joint security at the border with Guinea further recommend the need for common understanding between immigration officers of Liberia and Guinea.

In response, the Guinean Chief of Security at the border, Diallo Mammadou also accused the Liberian Immigration of similar harassment.

The Guinean BIN chief disclosed that not all complaints of harassments are truth, while calling on the ECOWAS delegation to find amicable solutions to the assisting problems between the two Countries.

 

As a member of the ECOWAS Delegation, Nimba County Senator Prince Johnson has warned security authorities at Liberia- Guinea border against harassing citizens of the two countries for self-gain.

Senator Johnson comment was in reaction to complaints of harassment by the joint security at the Ganta border against marketers during cross- border trading.

He recounted the long standing bilateral ties between the two countries which he said must be  kept by the future generation.

The Nimba Senator, also members of the Liberian ECOWAS Committee added that the assistance rendered Liberia during its civil unrest by Guinea should further unite the two countries in every aspect.

Senator Prince Johnson made the assertion at the weekend when ECOWAS Parliament led a sensitization and fact finding mission at the Liberia- Guinea Border.

“What is happening at this border is unbecoming, and let me say to the Guineans first that you laid down your lives, your economy went low, you lost rebenues just to keep peace in Liberia. So, please try to resolve what ever problem you have with your neighboring brothers and sisters. And to you Liberians on this side, you know in the head of yur conflict, some of you seeked refuge in this same Guinea, stop troublling your fellow citizens when ever they cross to do business and return home,” said Senator Johnson.

 

For his part, the Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Mustapha Cisse Lo has renewed calls for member countries to peacefully co- exist.

Speaker Lo maintained that Africa should not allow itself to be divided.

He said in the midst of division, outside forces will penetrate and set the continent apart.

According to him, unity will exist when all Africans have free movement in accordance with the laws of their respective countries.

He also urged African Heads of States to collaborate to enhance the growth and development of the continent including its economy, peace, human development among others.

“Let us remain united and peaceful African states, and help each other in transforming the continent for the better. We are victims of continuous civil conflicts, a situation that must be resisted by every African nation.  It is my hope that at the end of this meeting, the process of genuine peace and security will foster rapid development among the ECOWAS members States and the African continent at large.”

 

Speaker Mustapha Cisse Lo at the array of the ECOWAS Parliament made the comment while concluding a separate sensitization and fact finding mission of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea borders.

The visit of the parliament according to our legislative reporter was aimed at enhancing relationships with West African Citizens and intervenes in core programs of the ECOWAS Community.

It was also intended to legally promote free movement of persons, especially the impediments at the borders, peace and security thus resisting terrorism and insurgency, arms proliferation, and discourage cross border crimes among others.
