Liberian lawmakers are not accountable to their political institutions; IREED reveals in its annual report;

Monrovia: A report released by the Institute for Research and Democratic Development- IREED covering the first session of the legislature has unearthed the lack of accountability of lawmakers to their respective political institutions.

IREDD through its Executive Director Herold Aidoo told a media gathering Tuesday that political parties’ caucuses at the legislature remain weak and ineffective.

Aidoo added that lawmakers hardly provide feedback to their respective political parties as there is little or no consultation with political institutions on whose popularity and platform many of those lawmakers won.

He revealed that four lawmakers defected to the ruling CDC of these, two were from the former ruling Unity Party, one from the Liberty Party while the other came from the Liberia Transformation Party.

 

Commenting on Lawmaking, the IREDD Boss said they recorded 15 bills passed by the House of Representatives during the period under- review which witnessed ten concurrence by the Senate with one being vetoed by President George Weah while nine bills were passed into law.

At the Senate, he said IREDD recorded twenty two bills, twenty of which are pending concurrence by the House of Representatives with special emphasizes on the passage of the Local Government Act which has been signed by the President.

 

At the same time, the Opposition Unity Party has accumulated 282, the highest in score for participation in plenary from the both Houses while the governing CDC slipped to 213.

Considering attendance, the CDC overturned its score being present 898 times followed by the Unity Party with 835 including other parties who are below 600.

According to him, CDC lawmakers also toped in absences with 219 followed by the Unity Party with 144 among others.

He further revealed that the CDC scored 4As, 6Bs, 6Cs, 4Ds and 2Fs while its political rival the Unity Party who accumulated in attendance 7As, 6Bs, 3Cs, 1D, and 3Fs.

However, Nimba and Grand Gedeh are being ranked first as part of counties performance while Bomi and Montserrado are the least from both Houses.
