Montserrado retained County meet trophy as Champions

Monrovia-Montserrado County football team has maintained their Championship in the 2017/2018 edition of the National County Sports Meet after a 2-0 win over Bong County at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville City on Sunday.

After a healthy win over Bong County in the grand final of the Competition, Montserrado County District #13 Representative Honorable Saah Joseph expressed his happiness over the County Success in recent years.

Also speaking before the sound of the final whistle, an eminent citizen of Bong County Atty Bobby Livingstone applauded players of Bong County for their hard work throughout this year’s national sporting festival.

Montserrado scored the 2 goals in each of the half with left-back Sabastin Tuclar missed pass landing in the Bong County’s net in the 16 minutes, before Dambo Nah and Mark Karlay exchanged passes for the second goal in the 66th minute.
Bong County dominated the opening minutes in both halves with Nathaniel Tokpah, Kulah Gorloryon and Mark Mensah missing several goal changes.

Bong County suffered a couple of setbacks just before the match as several of the players were either injured or ill.

The county’s first choice keeper who was ill had to be forced into the match, as the second choice keeper had appeared injured and could not play.
The defeat was Bong County’s first loss in the 2017/18 competition haven finished as runners-up in Group I behind Nimba County who finished the competition in third place.
Montserrado County won the competition unbeaten for the second time, as they lifted only their second title of the tournament.

Montserrado County’s last defeat in the competition came against Grand Bassa Country in the 2012/2013 final, which Bassa won 3-1 on penalties.

Nimba County defeated Margibi County 2-1 in the third-place final.
In Kickball, Nimba County dominance of the sport came to an end with a 2-1 home-runs defeat at the hands of Grand Bassa County who were making their first grand final appearance.

Nimba County won the competition in the last two years and was hoping to win their 4th title by beating Grand Bassa on Sunday.

The 2017/18 edition of the competition featured only football and kickball, while Athletics, Volleyball, and Basketball were left out.

The National County Sports Meet is a non-league competition organized annually by the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports and competed for by the 15 sub-political divisions of the country.
