SENATORIAL BY-ELECTION IN STATE OF UNCERTAINTY-SAYS NEC

MOROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Elections Commission has disclosed that the government is yet to approve the 3.9million needed to fund the conduct of the Senatorial By-elections for Montserrado and Bong Counties Respectively.

NEC Chairman Jerome Kokayah told a news conference Tuesday that the commission is in the state of uncertainty due to government alleged failure to respond to the commission budget for the holding of the elections.

According to him the commission may not conduct the By-election that covers 45% percent of the total registered voters in the country without an adequate budget allocation.

He said based on the current situation, the NEC t has decided to postpone the date of the start of the candidate nomination period which was originally slated for March 15, 2018 until further clarity is given by the Ministry of Finance.

He however disclosed that the electoral timetable is extremely tight and if it is going to be able to meet the constitutional timelines it is also imperative that the issue of the budget is resolved as soon as possible.
