The Management of OK FM has condemned what it views as threats made by Representative Samuel Korgar against Julius Jeh, host of the station’s popular afternoon show, “OK Afternoon Conversation”.
The controversy began on Thursday when Representative Korgar called into the show to address discussions surrounding the current leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, where he plays a significant role. During the call, he issued statements that OK FM considers an attack on press freedom and journalistic independence.
Rep. Korgar warned the host, saying, “Julius, the way you are producing the show, you’re trying to incite Liberians against the government. You as a journalist, whatsoever happens, present it to the citizens and let the citizens make a determination. You’re inciting the public against the decision we took. Julius, let me tell you something: if you also carry on publicity that undermines or brings the House into public disrepute, that management (OK FM) can be invited by the House. Do you know that? You need to stop what you’re doing. You are biased, and you must stop. You’re a young man, and you have to be careful. I am telling you.”
The Management of OK FM strongly condemned these remarks, describing them as an attempt to intimidate and silence Julius Jeh. In a statement, OK FM said, “Julius’ analysis met all journalistic principles, and there was nothing said that could bring the House to public disrepute. It is glaring that the actions of lawmakers have already brought what is supposed to be an honorable house to immense public disrepute.”
OK FM also took exception to Rep. Korgar’s comparison of the station’s broadcast to the events in Rwanda, calling it “clueless and uncivilized.” The station reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and vowed not to be cowed into self-censorship.
The statement continued, “We strongly warn Rep. Korgar to desist not just from threatening Journalist Jeh but all other journalists carrying out professional duties for the growth of our democracy.”
OK FM emphasized the importance of a free press in Liberia’s democracy, urging international partners to monitor such incidents and hold individuals accountable for attempts to undermine free speech.
Representative Korgar’s Clarification
Following the backlash, Representative Korgar clarified his remarks, stating that his comments during the call were intended as a joke. He described Julius Jeh as a “little brother” whom he deeply respects and emphasized that he holds no animosity toward OK FM or its staff.
“I respect OK FM as a platform that has provided me with numerous opportunities to engage directly with Liberians. Host Julius Jeh, in particular, is someone I hold in high regard,” Korgar stated.
He explained that his remarks had been misconstrued and reiterated that he values the role of the media in fostering informed public discourse.
Despite his clarification, OK FM maintains that any threats against its staff are unacceptable and underscores the need for mutual respect between lawmakers and the media. This incident highlights the critical role of press freedom in upholding democracy and ensuring accountability in Liberia.
