On March 8, 2025, the Organization for Women Empowerment (OWE) Liberia brought together women leaders, activists, and community members to engage in pivotal discussions on environmental preservation and gender equality.
Held as part of the global celebration of International Women’s Day, the event, under the theme “Accelerate Action,” centered around “Enhancing Environmental Sustainability Through Collective Action.” This gathering marked a significant moment in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to involve women at the forefront of the fight against climate change, illustrating that women’s leadership is crucial to building a sustainable future.
The day’s indoor discussions were designed to amplify the voices of women as key stakeholders in the dialogue about climate change and environmental protection.
Leading the conversation, women from various sectors shared their experiences and insights, emphasizing how gender equality and environmental sustainability are inseparable goals.

From addressing deforestation to sustainable agricultural practices, women are not only deeply affected by environmental challenges—they are also vital in leading the charge toward solutions. These discussions affirmed that the empowerment of women is directly tied to the health of the environment.
The panels featured influential speakers who highlighted how women in Liberia are already driving tangible change. Through grassroots initiatives, women have been at the forefront of efforts to protect natural resources, advocate for cleaner communities, and push for policies that support both the environment and gender equality. These leaders illustrated that the absence of women from decision-making in climate matters often results in missed opportunities to create more inclusive, sustainable solutions.
OWE Liberia’s celebration moved beyond dialogue, reinforcing the practical side of collective action. Following the discussions, a community cleanup initiative was organized, demonstrating the power of hands-on environmental action. Women and youth volunteers came together to clean streets, remove waste, and promote responsible waste management practices. This initiative served as a reminder that collective efforts—especially those led by women—are essential to achieving sustainable environmental outcomes. It also highlighted the significant role of women in building resilient communities that are better equipped to face the challenges of a changing climate.

The event also underlined the growing recognition of women’s leadership in environmental preservation on the global stage. As climate resilience continues to be a priority for communities worldwide, the importance of including women in climate action and policy cannot be overstated. OWE Liberia’s celebration was a powerful example of how women are not only participants in environmental discussions—they are the architects of change.
OWE Liberia’s International Women’s Day event was not just a reflection on the progress made but a call to further action. Women, empowered and united, are leading the way toward a more sustainable future, one that integrates environmental preservation with social and gender justice.
Through their unwavering commitment to both gender equality and sustainability, OWE Liberia is helping to pave the way for a more equitable and resilient Liberia, where women’s voices and actions shape the future of the planet.
