Group of 77 Laments Discrimination, Receives Humanitarian Aid from Unification Movement of Liberia

Monrovia, June 9, 2025 – Members of the Group of 77 Disabled Center have expressed deep frustration and sorrow over what they describe as long-standing systemic neglect and discrimination within Liberian society.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, Mr. Joseph W. Jimmy highlighted that much of the discrimination they face stems from their physical conditions, which continue to marginalize them in various sectors of society.

“Because of our condition, even if we apply for jobs we are qualified for, we’re not given the opportunity simply because of our disability,” Mr. Jimmy lamented.

He made these remarks during a donation ceremony held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Group of 77 headquarters on Newport Street in Monrovia. The Unification Movement of Liberia (UMOL), in collaboration with the National Safety Partnership of Liberia (NASAPAL), donated essential food supplies, including rice, Vita, vegetable oil, and other basic necessities.

UMOL, a nonprofit organization founded by Liberian-American Philip Woods, is committed to fighting discrimination, tribalism, and marginalization while promoting unity and inclusivity among all Liberians.

In an emotional statement, Mr. Jimmy expressed profound gratitude to UMOL and its CEO, describing the donation as a “timely intervention.” He encouraged the organization to continue its support for the Group of 77 and maintain its advocacy for national unity and inclusion.

“We don’t even know how to thank this organization enough, especially for their message against discrimination and tribalism,” Mr. Jimmy added. “These are the conversations we need to help bring real change and end marginalization in our country.”

About the Group of 77

The Group of 77 Disabled Center was established in 1977 by then-President Rev. Dr. William R. Tolbert Jr. to address the needs and welfare of Liberia’s disabled population. It operates under the direct oversight of the Vice President of Liberia and remains one of the nation’s key institutions serving people with disabilities.

Located on Newport Street in Monrovia, the center provides a wide range of services, including vocational training, healthcare access, social inclusion programs, and advocacy for disability rights. All efforts are aimed at improving the quality of life for its members and fostering a more inclusive Liberian society.

Despite these noble goals, the concerns raised by Mr. Jimmy and others underscore the need for urgent attention to ensure the organization lives up to its mission. These voices highlight the reality that many members still feel left behind.

Words from the Donor

Presenting the donation on behalf of UMOL, Bishop Jerry C. M. Yarpa reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to standing with people living with disabilities. He emphasized the urgent need to confront and eliminate discrimination, tribalism, and marginalization across Liberia.

“On behalf of our CEO, Mr. Philip Woods, as we turn over these items, we want you to know that we are with you in this fight,” Bishop Yarpa said. “This is the core mission of the Unification Movement of Liberia, and we will not stop until we achieve unity and inclusivity for all Liberians.”

A Call for Broader Support

Meanwhile, UMOL CEO Philip E.P.  Woods, ii  is calling on the William R. Tolbert Jr. Foundation to step in and support the Group of 77, stressing the urgent nature of their plight.

“The situation of these people is extraordinary, and I am calling on the foundation to make a timely intervention,” Mr. Woods stated.
