The president of the Liberian Basketball Association (LBA), Mr. Abraham Samukai, is set to lead a two-member delegation to the FIBA Mid-Term Congress 2025, scheduled to take place from May 14 to 18 in Bahrain. The congress will bring together delegates from FIBA’s 212 national member federations.
This marks the first time Bahrain will host the prestigious event, made possible through a partnership with the Bahrain Olympic Committee and the Bahrain Basketball Association.
The Liberian delegation comprises Mr. Abraham Samukai, President of the LBA, and Mr. Calvin Diggs, Secretary General. Mr. Diggs departed Liberia late last week, while Mr. Samukai is expected to leave the country on Wednesday, May 14.
During the Congress, delegates will receive updates on FIBA’s global initiatives and developments since the last Congress held in Manila, Philippines, in 2023. Key topics will include the implementation of the FIBA Plus programs, which supported 112 National Federations in 2024.
Additionally, the Congress will review FIBA’s strategic focus areas, particularly efforts aimed at empowering national federations and promoting women’s participation in basketball. Programs such as Her World, Her Rules will be spotlighted for their impact in advancing gender equity in the sport.
Delegates will also deliberate on proposed amendments to the FIBA General Statutes and consider submissions from the Central Board and National Federations. Other agenda items include the ratification of decisions related to membership suspensions and expulsions, as well as the conferring of honorary titles such as Honorary President and Secretary General Emeritus.
The Congress will also highlight several key initiatives under the FIBA Foundation’s Basketball For Good project, which uses basketball as a tool for social change. The foundation’s board is expected to convene during the congress to discuss ongoing and future programs.
A major highlight of the event will be the FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 17. The Class of 2025 includes Spanish basketball icon Pau Gasol, American basketball great Dawn Staley, and legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski—each recognized for their outstanding contributions to the global development of the sport.
The FIBA Mid-Term Congress 2025 serves as a vital platform for aligning FIBA’s global strategy, addressing governance matters, and celebrating the achievements of individuals who have significantly shaped the game of basketball.
