ITF Lifts 15-Year Ban on Liberia Tennis Federation

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has officially lifted the long-standing suspension placed on the Liberia Tennis Federation (LTF), restoring the country’s full rights and privileges as an active member of the global tennis governing body.

In a formal communication addressed to LTF President Paul Jamal King, the ITF stated that its Board of Directors had decided to lift the suspension in accordance with Article 4 of the ITF Constitution. The reinstatement takes immediate effect, bringing an end to nearly 15 years of Liberia’s exclusion from international tennis competitions.

“It is with pleasure we welcome you back to active membership of the ITF,” the letter stated.

The ITF also emphasized its commitment to supporting tennis development in Liberia through its global strategy, ITF2024+, which places tennis growth and infrastructure at the heart of its mission.

“Tennis development is at the core of our strategy, ITF2024+. I encourage you and your team to engage with ITF Development Officer Amie Ben Makhlouf to discuss how the ITF’s development strategy can support your efforts to grow the sport in Liberia,” the communication added.

The ITF further encouraged the LTF leadership to reach out with any questions regarding its membership or to request meetings with ITF Executive Directors and other departments to explore avenues of support and collaboration.

A Joyous Moment for Liberian Tennis

The lifting of the ban has been met with widespread celebration across Liberia. Many citizens, particularly tennis enthusiasts, took to social media to express their excitement, describing the announcement as a “stepping stone” toward revitalizing and elevating the sport in the country.

The ban, which lasted approximately 15 years, severely impacted tennis development in Liberia. It restricted participation in international tournaments, reduced access to development programs, and left local players and coaches with limited opportunities for growth and exposure.

Progress Under Paul Jamal King’s Leadership

Since taking over as president of the Liberia Tennis Federation, Paul Jamal King has spearheaded efforts to revitalize the sport in the country. His leadership has been marked by incremental but notable progress, laying the foundation for Liberia’s reintegration into the global tennis community.

Key achievements under his tenure include:

Renovation of the LTF headquarters

Appointment of officials in key administrative and technical positions

Recruitment of head coaches and a technical director

Organization of training workshops and development programs

These efforts have not gone unnoticed by the ITF and may have played a role in the Board’s decision to reinstate Liberia’s membership.

Looking Ahead

With its international ban now lifted, the Liberia Tennis Federation is expected to re-engage with global tennis activities, including participation in international tournaments, capacity-building programs, and talent development initiatives.

The renewed membership offers a critical opportunity for the country to rebuild its tennis infrastructure and restore its presence on the international stage.

As the LTF begins this new chapter, the focus will now shift to ensuring sustained growth, attracting grassroots participation, and fostering a new generation of tennis talent in Liberia.

Liberia has been invited to participate in the upcoming Africa Junior Championship, scheduled to take place in Lomé, Togo, at the end of August.

The tournament is designed for youth aged 12 and under.

Currently, coaches are undergoing training exercises at the national sports stadium, where young players will also be selected to join the delegation.

The final team will include the selected athletes, coaches, and members of the technical staff.

This marks Liberia’s first international youth tournament appearance in several years, making it a significant milestone for the country’s tennis development.
